Time-Life started out as a book divisions of Time Inc. in 1961, then they added Music in 1962 and now is one of the world's largest direct marketers of books, Music and DVDs. That means, by browsing through the normal CD retail stores, you won't be able to find their merchandise. Their collections are mostly ordered online via Ebay, Amazon and through TV advertisement via infomercials.
If you are a true fan of music collections or would just like to get a feel of the music on a certain genre. I would definately recommend Time-Life Music. For a full discography of Time-Life, please link to http://www.bsnpubs.com/warner/time-life/time-lifestory.html
Why Do I Recommend Time Life.
1. Diversity of Genre - The range of genre span from Nostalgia (Your Hit Parade Series) to Rock 'n' Roll (The Rock 'n' Roll Era Series) to Pop Songs of the Sixties till The Eighties (The AM Gold Series, The Classic Rock Series, The Sound of Seventies and Eighties Series) . If you are a true collectors of golden oldies, you wouldn't want to look any where else as the collections are already comprehensive enough profiling all the "true" and "representative" songs of that era. Unlike some sleazy compilations produce by some record companies for the sake of good money, comes out with titles like "The Best Songs of the Sixties" but turns out the songs is not the best of the era, but only lesser known hits, which wasted our hard earned money.
2. No Repetition on Selection of Songs - Almost once in a while, some record companies will churned out album proclaiming "The Greatest Hits of ......" But turns out the selections of songs are the repetition of the previous compilations album produced by some other record companies, only to thrown in a few lesser known hits. However, that is not the case for Time-Life Music, all the series release without any repeat of the songs which makes us well spend for the money.
The songs are properly documented and profile according to the catagory and genre of the album produced. E.g. one of the album entitled "Teen Idol", thus, you can find strings of hits like "Love Letters In The Sand" - Pat Boone, Venus - Frankie Avalon, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen - Neil Sedaka, Puppy Love - Paul Anka, Dreamin' - Johnny Burnette, Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares, and etc. All the songs selected are properly related to the early 60's which makes us think of girls with ponytails hanging around the malt shop having a chocolate fudge sundae secretly discussing a crush on a boy.
3. Songs are clear and crispy - A key selling point of these collections is that each track was digitally transferred to CD using the original master recordings, as opposed to being "re-records" whereby only an old phonograph record, or an old radio copy is used for the transfer.
